Knife holders for the kitchen using magnets

Knife holders work well in every kitchen and are currently in great demand. There are a few points to bear in mind, which we will discuss in more detail below.

Knife holders as perfect helpers in the kitchen.

Magnets are useful in many areas of everyday life. In addition to magnetic fasteners, office magnets and magnetic knife holders are, on the one hand, very practical, as they are compact and ensure that all your kitchen knives are always ready and within reach. So the endless search for knives in a drawer is annoying and unused wall space is used significantly. On the other hand, a knife rack also looks very elegant and gives every kitchen a distinguishing factor. There are very different variants to suit the individual design of every kitchen. Whether one prefers a magnetic strip or whether permanent magnets should disappear invisibly behind a board is purely a matter of taste.

Especially if you have bought expensive and beautiful knives, you will want to make sure that they are well preserved and are not scratched in the drawers or even bent and broken. It also does a lot, if you present these knives decoratively in your kitchen. Therefore, magnetic knife holders are a great way to cleverly stage your knives and enhance your kitchen without much effort.

What do magnetic knife holders look like?

You can buy magnetic knife holders in kitchen shops or you can customize them yourself. There is already a multitude of designs that are ready to buy: rustic and untreated natural wood, different types of wood, varnished wood, square shapes, elongated boards , and hanging or standing knife boards. There are no limits to imagination and design.

The own design of a knife rack has some advantages such as determining the design of the kitchen, on the other hand, we can choose the length and width of the board. Of course, those who only use two or three knives need a shorter board than those who have a generous collection of knives for filleting and cooking.

How to make a knife holder?

To make a magnetic knife board, we need, on the one hand, a suitable board and magnets, which are usually mounted on the back of the board. Not all magnets are suitable for this project, but in principle, disc magnets are recommended. The preferred thickness will depend on the thickness of the board or whether the blade will have direct contact with the magnet. If this is the case, understandably, the magnet does not need to be as strong.

If you have your board and want the magnets to remain invisible, drill holes in the back of the wooden board so that the magnets fit into it. They are then glued into the holes. Although this has the advantage that the magnets are invisible, at the same time the adhesive strength of the magnets decreases as the distance increases This should be taken into account when choosing magnets.

A practical example illustrates how much the magnetic force decreases with increasing distance:

As a rule of thumb, one magnet is sufficient for each knife, but with heavy knives of more than 100 grams, it is better to use two magnets to ensure that the adhesive force is high enough. Before gluing the magnets, it is best to do a test to check whether the magnets are strong enough at a distance of three millimeters from the blade or whether the distance should be reduced to two or one millimeters. Of course, this also depends on your personal preference for the strength of the magnets. Once you have reached the desired adhesion, you can stick the magnets on the board and use it after drying.

If we do not want to drill holes, we can resort to a simpler variant and produce magnetic boards with direct magnetic contact. This way the knives always hold.

What should we pay attention to with magnetic knife holders?

There is no risk that the contact of the magnets will wear the knives, as this is an unfounded argument about magnets. Therefore, there is no reason for concern, nothing prevents the use of magnetic knife holders. Therefore, there is no reason for concern, nothing prevents the use of magnetic knife holders.

Be careful with this type of knife storage, it is only necessary if you have small children and they can reach these knives under certain circumstances. If this is the case, one would prefer to choose a lockable option until the children are taller and accidents with sharp knives cannot occur.
