What is the lifespan of a magnet under extreme conditions?

It depends on the material. Samarium-cobalt and alnico magnets offer excellent thermal resistance, while neodymium magnets may degrade at temperatures above 80-150 °C without proper coating.

Magnets & Gauss

When measuring the magnetic field of industrial magnets, two different magnetic properties must be considered: remanence (Br) and the generated magnetic field.

In the first case, remanence (Br) refers to an intrinsic property of the material. This means that it defines the raw material that will form the magnet.Using this raw material, and considering remanence along with other magnetic properties that define a permanent magnet, we can determine the magnetic performance of the final product—which also depends on its geometry.In other words, we assess the magnetic field generated by the magnet.

This is the result of the magnet’s quality, defined by its intrinsic properties (Br, HcB, HcJ, and BHmax) in combination with its geometry and magnetic configuration.

Both properties are measured in Gauss, which can often lead to confusion.

For example, magnets with 14,000 Gauss (Br of 14,000 Gauss) are used in all IMA magnetic systems.
